Born into a mining family in Cumbria in 1931, expressionist painter Sheila Fell found her inspiration in the unforgiving landscape of the mountains and fells of the northern Lake District.

She evolved a poetic language to produce paintings of stunning impact, which expressed the powerful elemental nature of the landscape and the interdependence between nature, the earth and the people who worked on it.

Talented, determined, and charismatic, Sheila Fell was one of the very few women artists to achieve national recognition in the 1950s and 60s. She held to her vision despite the tides of fashion which  threatened to engulf figurative painting in that era. Her tragic early  death at 48 in 1979 cut short a burgeoning career.

This biography - monograph includes illustrations of many hitherto unseen works and interviews with those closest to her to craft a portrait of a remarkable artist.
